How to Approach the Work That Is Stopping You and Gradually Fall in Love with It

From the last week of October, I was feeling worried, tensed, and anxious. I decided to take a plunge into something new, and it made me restless from within. I started having sleepless nights again, and to the worst, I started having anxiety in my life, again.

I managed to control the level of anxiety somehow, struggling hard in the past few months and I was happy that I was not having anxiety attacks anymore. But whenever I was thinking of taking the first step towards the work that was scheduled in the second week of November, I felt anxious again.

When the day reached, I felt frozen in fear. I woke up early in the morning, but I was lazily spending time with myself. Time was passing this way but then I remembered that if I skip the work for today, I will still have to face this situation and this fear on the next day.

So, I decided to face the fear and challenge the situation. Instead of escaping the day’s work, I decided to do it anyway.

I gathered all my courage and started approaching the work following the steps below. And trust me, it worked like magic!

This is why I have brought the step-by-step process to approach the work that is stopping you, and gradually, to fall in love with it.

How to Approach the Work That Is Stopping You

Step 1: Ask yourself ‘what’ is stopping you and ‘why’

I believe, there are certain reasons why you have been resisting yourself from doing that specific work. Maybe you are afraid of trying something new, or you are overthinking about the consequences or something else that you are yet to find out. At first, you need to sit in quiet, have a deep breath, and relax. Then, without being anxious, slowly, ask yourself ‘why’ the work is stopping you to approach it. ‘What’ is the main reason for which you are feeling reluctant or afraid or worried about doing the work.

Try to go deep into the self and find out your ‘what’ and ‘why’.

Step 2: Think about the consequences if you do it fearlessly

Now, gather strength and courage by noting down all the consequences if the work is done. Don’t feel biased against the negative outcomes. If you succeed to do the work, you never know what consequences it would fetch to you and your life. It might bring some positivity but it could bring some negative things too. You may fail to achieve the goal that you intend to get from the job. But, also keep in mind that you will definitely earn some good things in life if you succeed at the job. So, go for it.

Step 3: Note down the steps that are involved in executing the work

This is one of the most important tasks to do when it comes to executing any work. I personally feel that when you note down the steps involved in the work, you can easily approach the easiest one at first. Also, when you will see the steps included in the job, you can easily make a flow chart for the work and visualize your ideas.

Step 4: Break the whole work process into small fragments

Apparently, you might feel that the job has only one step that is needed to be executed by you. But most of the time, what we see is not the reality. Give yourself some time, stay away from distractions. Observe closely the job and break the whole procedure into some small parts. This will also help you to make a priority list of the segments of the job tasks. And certainly, you will feel lighter.

Step 5: Find out which part of that work you ‘love’ to do

Trust me when I tell you that there is definitely something in the job that you would really like to do. To whatever extent this seems boring to you or you keep procrastinating on it, there is a part that you really love to do. Maybe it brings joy to you, maybe it brings you excitement or you feel passionate about doing that part, that tiny segment of the work. Your very first task is finding out that now.

Step 6: Start doing that part at first

Starting with the simplest step will be like building something from scratch. So, start doing the part that seems you the easiest, and you like to do the most. Enjoy doing that tiny task and make it fun for yourself.

Step 7: After executing that part, appreciate yourself

We often ignore to celebrate our little winnings. We always look for the big things to come out well and we forget to observe the small parts and feel accomplished in those moments of achievement. When it feels hard for you to approach the work, you start with the easiest part that you love to do. Now, you have taken the very first step. So, you should appreciate yourself for that and feel happy.

It’s all about connecting the little things in life that help you in building the pathway to life’s goals.

Step 8: Remind yourself of the benefits of doing the work

After doing the first step, now, take a break and relax a bit. The first step seems the hardest always. So, you have already approached the job and the first step is done. Now, you should sit and remind yourself again of the benefits of the work if you finish it successfully. This time, note down the positive outcomes only. No negative vibes, please.

Step 9: Make yourself feel accomplished after executing each part of the job

“You are doing great”, assure yourself by saying that repeatedly. Because at first, it was tough for you to even start doing the job. But now, look at your progress; how far you have come. You have started executing the work with the easiest part, then you have approached other steps, slowly yet with determination. That’s why now you are here. You deserve a clap, appreciate yourself. And do it after executing every step.

Step 10: Look at yourself and see the ‘change’

This is another most important step in the whole process of approaching the work that has been stopping you. When you will succeed in overcoming your own fear and finish the job, you will see changes in your

  • Mindset
  • Self-confidence
  • Thinking Process

Observe the changes and feel happy for welcoming them into your life.

“What we fear of doing most is usually what we most need to do.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Step 11: Befriend these all small acts of change

Life is all about embracing changes. Today, you faced your fear and won over it. You dared to challenge yourself in approaching the work that has been stopping you. I am proud of you. Now, observe yourself and see the changes that happened to you. As I had experienced some important changes in me. I have experienced a surge of change in my mindset, I developed another level of self-confidence, my thinking process was also shifted to positive thinking and I became a believer in the universe’s abundance of positive resources.

These all made me realize the importance of taking one thing at a time and celebrating each step as an achievement in life. This is the best way to face your fear and go ahead.
